As a Quarterlifer, your life is one huge transition phase after another. Whether you are preparing for a new baby or moving to another city after graduation, transition phases are hectic, yet exciting experiences in your life. And hey, why shouldn’t they be? After you get over the initial shock of your parents’ heart-shattering “you’re on your own now” speech, it’s time to pick up the pieces and move on to bigger and better things.
One of the biggest moments in a young professional’s life is their first job, followed shortly by the need to transition your “young” wardrobe to match your now grown-up life. Dressing the part of a young professional can be a daunting, not to mention costly, task. But you’re not on your own. Our tips can help you stay fashion forward and budget savvy.
Follow the 70/30 Rule. This simply means buying 70 percent classic pieces and 30 percent trendy pieces. Following the 70/30 rule allows you to do develop your wardrobe from the ground up, starting with basic pieces and building on those to create multiple mix and match outfits.
Leave the plastic at home. So you have your first credit card and you want to use it, right? Although a credit card can be useful for some purchases, buying lots of different items in multiple locations on a card can make you lose sight of your expenses. If you’re cruising the mall, you can avoid overspending by calculating a budget before you leave the house and keeping tabs on how much you are spending by using a debit card or cash and keeping track of your receipts.
The Internet can be your BFF. Although being a member of multiple email lists can be a little overwhelming, choosing your favorite stores and receiving their daily emails will give you the inside scoop on sales and special offers, both in store and online. You can also follow your favorite retailers on social media outlets to see advertised offers and special discounts to their social media savvy shoppers.
Develop a budget. It’s important to develop a budget for all of your monthly needs. Developing a budget will allow you to plan out how much money you can allocate toward clothing and go from there. We know you don’t want to become a professional window shopper, so creating a budget will allow you to get in the game, without totally ruining your finances.
Know the code. Before you even think about shopping for your wardrobe, make sure you understand your company’s dress code. If your co-workers follow business casual attire, you want to make sure you don’t buy all business professional clothes and waste your money. It’s great to have a style all your own, but you don’t want to show up to prom wearing overalls, do you?
Following these simple rules will have your closet transitioning from young 20-something to professional in no time. Creating rules and sticking to them will keep you and your wallet happy. Your wardrobe will thank you later!
