Delta Community host financial learning camps

The Champion

Delta Community Credit Union (DCCU) held Cool Cash Money Camps on June 18, focusing on teaching kids about money managements at the credit union’s Decatur branch at 160 Clairmont Avenue.

DCCU launched its Cool Cash Money Camps in 2014. The camps are held during the summer at select Delta Community branches for parents to join their children in learning essential financial skills and concepts.

According to a news release, representatives from DCCU led two workshops, which featured curriculum based on age-appropriate National Literacy Standards.

According to DCCU’s website, elementary school-aged kids explored the basics of money in a fun, interactive session led by DCCU representatives. Topics included earning, saving, spending, and donating.

Middle school-aged campers took a deeper dive into financial decision-making and how it applies to real life. Students built on the basics and took part in a guided lesson on personalized money. Topics included budgeting, insurance, credit basics, and an introduction to investing.

Both classes were led by DCCU representative Ryan Behrens and assisted by DCCU representative Doll Thomas.

DCCU officials state that after a series of games and interactive lessons focused on money management, children, teens and parents who participated in the camps walked away more financially savvy.
