July 2026

A Message from Our Chief Operating Officer

Delta Community COO Matthew Shepherd

Dear Valued Members,

On behalf of all Delta Community employees, I extend warm greetings and express our sincere appreciation for your patronage and loyalty.

Time continues to fly, and we are amazed to find ourselves halfway through 2026 already. We know the past six months have brought unanticipated economic challenges from spikes in inflation and other pressures on everyday affordability. Our focus on providing you with exceptional value, support and advice on the financial services you rely on to manage your household needs remains unwavering as well as motivating. We deliver on this commitment, in part, by offering consistent, highly competitive deposit and loan rates. Our six- and 12-month CD rates continue to present an excellent way to optimize savings and preserve flexibility—especially when staggering maturity dates through a practice known as laddering.

I want to use this letter to briefly address another compelling topic: Generative AI. You cannot open a publication, scan a news site or tune into a radio or TV program today without seeing or hearing this technology mentioned. Our own Julie Bates, Vice President of Retirement & Investment Services, was interviewed in early June on WXIA/11-Alive relative to a national survey that reported 66% of consumers have queried Generative AI applications for insight into financial planning. Julie shared good guidance and caution on smart usage of such tools, and you can access her segment through WXIA’s online archive for “Money Moves” stories.

Given the role I am privileged to hold, I am increasingly asked by members, neighbors and other interested parties about the implications of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) for the banking industry broadly and Delta Community specifically.

At Delta Community, we have two clear objectives when considering Generative AI usage:

  1. To empower our employees toward ever greater effectiveness, so we can raise the level of our personalized service and responsiveness even higher. We are augmenting with the technology, not automating to replace people and reduce staff.
  2. To accomplish more with our employees through efficiency and productivity gains, which can allow us to invest more of our shared capital in free services; additional conveniences; and attractive deposit and loan rates.

Our members can also rest assured of our steadfast commitment to the operating principles of:

  • Accountability
  • Data privacy and protection
  • Governance and compliance
  • Integrity and transparency
  • Safety and security

We have established an executive oversight committee to approve, monitor and manage Generative AI activity. Usage is limited to well-defined, internal business cases that align with our strategic objectives; conducted via authorized, licensed applications that have been tested to meet our strict data privacy, information security and IT standards; and conditioned on continuous human review and validation.

Delta Community was founded in 1940 on a cooperative, not-for-profit basis. We have always sought to develop personal connections and lifelong member relationships. We recognize the trust that you place in us and never take your confidence for granted. Our employees will always be easy to reach; grateful to serve; and equipped with specialized training and the latest technology and tools.

Again, thank you for your support of Delta Community. We wish you a fun, safe Fourth of July weekend and much pride in the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

$15,000 Awarded to Three HBCU Students

Delta Community HBCU Scholarship recipients

Last month, Delta Community and Atlanta radio station V-103 presented our first HBCU Scholarships of 2026, awarding $5,000 each to Camille Johnson, Taylor Harper and Tyler Lawrence. We were honored to meet them at a special on-site ceremony at Delta Community’s headquarters, where we presented their checks in person.

Camille Johnson, a rising senior at Hampton University, is pursuing a degree in Strategic Communications with a minor in Marketing while maintaining a GPA above 4.0. An Honors College student and Gracie Award recipient, Camille combines creativity and service through projects like “Color My Future,” an HBCU-themed coloring book designed to inspire young students to pursue higher education.

Taylor Harper, a graduate of Charles R. Drew Charter School, maintained a 4.1 GPA while serving as Student Body President and co-founding Atlanta Mind Project, a nonprofit focused on teen mental health awareness. As she begins her studies at Spelman College, Taylor will continue to advocate for student wellness, leadership development and greater access to mental health resources.

Tyler Lawrence, a graduate of Union Grove High School, earned a 4.2 GPA while taking AP and dual enrollment courses. This fall, he will attend Morehouse College, where he plans to pursue a career in healthcare and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Through leadership with the Henry County NAACP Youth Council, mentoring programs and more than 300 volunteer hours, Tyler has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving his community.

To learn more about each of these exceptional students, visit DeltaCommunityCU.com/HBCU.

Delta Community awards a total of $50,000 in scholarships each year—$25,000 through our general scholarship program and $25,000 specifically for students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In 2026, the HBCU Scholarship will support a total of five recipients—three already awarded and two more to be announced this fall.
