So why is it called "Umbrella"? It’s because it covers liability claims from all policies underneath it, such as auto and homeowners policies. If you were to exhaust the liability limits on your home or auto or other policy, your Umbrella would pick up where they left off.
To help you better understand, let’s say you have an Auto Insurance Policy with liability limits of $500,000 and a Homeowners Insurance policy with a limit of $300,000. With a million-dollar umbrella, your limits become, in effect, $1,500,000 on the Auto Policy and $1,300,000 on a homeowners liability claim.
Not only does it provide broad insurance beyond what you get with your other policies, it also provides coverage for claims that may be excluded by other liability policies including false arrest, libel, slander and liability coverage for any rental units you might own. It really is an extra level and could be just what you’re looking for.
