$10,000 Awarded to Two HBCU Students

Delta Community HBCU Scholarship recipients

In June, Delta Community and Atlanta radio station V-103 presented our first  HBCU Scholarships of 2022 awarding $5,000 each to Francesca McDaniel and Cameron Rainer.

Francesca McDaniel, a rising junior at Spelman College, is majoring in Biology. She plans to become a Physician’s Assistant with a specialty in obstetrics and gynecology. Her extensive extracurricular activities include membership in the Pre-Physician’s Assistant Association, working with Upward Bound assisting high school students in biology, and co-hosting a podcast giving advice and sharing college experiences. Additionally, Francesca tutors young children in reading and math, and she tutors high school students in biology through a program at Morehouse College.

Cameron Rainer will be a freshman attending the Dr. Levi Watkins Institute Medical Program at Tennessee State University, where he will be majoring in biology with an emphasis in premed studies. Cameron plans to attend medical school after graduating with his bachelor's degree, and his goal is to become a medical doctor specializing in neurology. A stellar high school student, Cameron had a 3.95 grade point average at Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia. While at Grayson, he had a very impressive academic and athletic career, including contributing more than 300 hours of community service, being a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, the Debate Club and the Kappa League mentoring program—all while competing as a pole vaulter on the track team.

Throughout 2022, we will award a total of $20,000 in scholarships to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities, with our next application period opening in August. The HBCU Scholarship is part of Delta Community’s annual Scholarship Program. Visit our website to learn more about all of the scholarships that we offer.

Cool Girls, Inc, pictured above, empowers young girls in low-income communities by breaking the cycle of poverty that derails their progress through education and academic excellence. They received a grant of $7,500 for their Girls Club Program, which provides education, advocacy and material resources to girls from second grade through high school.

21st Century Leaders, Inc. received $7,500 to help with their mission of connecting, transforming and inspiring high school students to leverage diversity, explore career opportunities and become leaders in their schools, communities and the workforce. Funds from the grant will be used to launch additional locations at metro Atlanta high schools where low-income students will have access to lessons in leadership and entrepreneurship, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs. In addition, our grant will fund five students’ participation in 21CL’s Summer Youth Leadership Camps.
