An extra layer of liability insurance can give you an extra level of comfort. These policies are sold in increments of one million dollars and provides you more protection over what other insurance policies cover if an accident were to happen.
So why is it called "Umbrella"? It’s because it covers liability claims from all policies underneath it, such as auto and homeowners policies. If you were to exhaust the liability limits on your home, auto or other policies, Umbrella Insurance would pick up where they left off.
Let's say you have an auto insurance policy with a liability limit of $500,000 and a homeowners policy with a limit of $300,000. With a million-dollar umbrella, your limits become $1,500,000 on the auto policy and $1,300,000 for your homeowners insurance.
Not only does it increase your overall coverage, it also covers claims such as false arrest, libel, slander and liability for any rental units you might own. This type of protection is typically excluded with other types of policies.
