How to Switch Your Bank Accounts to Delta Community Credit Union

How to Switch Your Bank Accounts to Delta Community Credit Union

Delta Community was originally established as a credit union for Delta Air Lines®, Inc., employees and families. We have been serving communities throughout metro Atlanta for the past 85 years, while offering membership to anyone who lives or works in the 16 counties we serve. Because of our members’ faith in our products and services, we have become Georgia’s largest credit union

For anyone considering joining our Credit Union and benefitting from our products and services, please know that at Delta Community, once you're a member, you're a member for life. Regardless of whether you move out of the state of Georgia, change jobs or retire, we’re committed to serving our members throughout the many stages of their life’s journey

We always welcome new members and we are grateful for their trust. To make it easy to switch from another financial services provider to Delta Community, we've created a simple, step-by-step guide. Below, you’ll find clear instructions to help you transition various accounts smoothly and with confidence.

If you need any help with setting up and connecting your accounts, then please contact our Member Care Center via our toll-free number at 800-544-3328 with specific details of how we may assist you—or visit one of our branch offices.

Here are some key steps to move your accounts over to Delta Community—and if you need our help at any time, then please just ask!

  1. Be mindful of timing when transitioning accounts to ensure all payments and deposits are made on time. If you have regular automatic payments (or deposits), then try to set up new accounts for these incoming or outgoing funds well before the time they are due. For example, if your payments or deposits happen at the end or beginning of the month, set up the new accounts right after most of the automatic transfers have been made and as many days or weeks as possible in advance of the next transactions.
  2. Map current accounts that are going to be closed against the planned new Delta Community accounts you are opening. First, make a list of all current accounts with your existing financial services provider, including how they are connected for deposits, payments and transfers. Next, create and align a list of anticipated new Delta Community accounts to match up with the accounts that will be shut down. Consider if you may want either fewer or more accounts than what you have now. Additional new accounts could include savings or checking accounts dedicated to specific goals like buying a new car or funding a vacation. Other account types you might add include an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), Certificates of Deposit (CDs) or a credit card.
  3. You might want to keep your old accounts open until all new accounts are open, connected and working properly. Keep your old accounts open while you're opening new ones, maybe for several weeks. This generous extra time allows you to be certain that drafts have stopped, outstanding checks have cleared (and been cashed or deposited), and you can confirm that deposits or transfers are coming in on time and being directed correctly to your new Delta Community accounts.
  4. Open your new accounts at Delta Community—but please know that you are required to start by opening and maintaining a Savings Account with the Credit Union. You can open some accounts online, or you can go in person to a branch office. The first account that needs to be opened is the one required to establish membership with Delta Community Credit Union—a Savings Account. To open a Savings Account, a new member will usually need to provide personal, government-issued identification (such as a driver's license or U.S. passport), a Social Security number, a copy of a recent utility bill for the residence where the new member currently lives and a minimum deposit of five U.S. dollars ($5.00). Most accounts offered by Delta Community can be opened online. However, if you prefer the in-branch experience, a Delta Community member service agents can also help you get started with a new membership and assist with setting up your accounts as well as online banking and our mobile app.
  5. Need our Routing Number for deposits and connecting accounts? It is 261071315, and it can be found on every page of our website, in the footer.
  6. Redirect deposits from your employer, Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, retirement and other types of payments, accounts or organizations. It is very important to understand that your Delta Community Savings Account number is also your Credit Union member number. They are the same and unique to each individual member. It’s extremely important to keep this in mind when setting up Direct Deposit and then linking it to your Savings Account, either within Delta Community or to other financial institutions.
  7. Link your Delta Community accounts to those you may have at other financial institutions. It’s common for Delta Community members to link their Credit Union accounts, such as a Savings Account to a Checking Account, or connect them to an investment account. If you are linking accounts, be certain you are always using your account number.
  8. Set up automatic payments with Online Bill Pay for regular, ongoing expenses such as home utilities, credit card charges, streaming services and annual or monthly memberships. Double check that all Delta Community account numbers are correct, especially for your member number and the routing number.

Again, when connecting accounts, make very certain you are using your member number—it is exactly the same number as your Savings Account number.
  9. Finally, transfer funds and close out your accounts at your former financial services company. If everything is set up carefully with your Delta Community accounts and appears to be functioning appropriately, then you are ready to cut over to your new accounts. Either transfer funds electronically from the old accounts to the new ones, or get cashier’s checks of your old accounts to deposit into your new ones at the Credit Union.
  10. Remember—if you need any help with setting up and connecting your accounts, then please contact our Member Care Center via our toll-free number at 800-544-3328, or visit one of our branches
